The Time We Took a Pause

The Time We Took a Pause is a gentle children’s story about separation, uncertainty, and the reassurance that love can remain steady even when family life changes.

When grown-ups need time apart, children may be left with questions they do not fully understand and feelings that can be difficult to name. This story gives children a simple, reassuring way to make sense of that experience while reminding them of something especially important: grown-up problems are never a child’s responsibility to fix.

Through soft watercolor illustrations and warm, age-appropriate language, The Time We Took a Pause follows children through the experience of missing Daddy, waiting, reconnecting, and adjusting to being together again. The story makes room for mixed feelings along the way—because reunions can bring happiness, relief, uncertainty, and even a little awkwardness all at once.

The book was created to help families open gentle conversations during periods of separation and reconnection. It may also be useful for therapists, social workers, counselors, caregivers, and other adults who support children through family transitions.

At its heart, the message is simple: children are allowed to be children, and love can remain present even during a pause.
